FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What are these maps?
Each topographic map is drawn by a pen plotter — a machine that holds a real pen and draws every contour line individually on archival paper. The designs are generated from real elevation data, so every line represents actual terrain. They're somewhere between a print and an original, and that's what makes them interesting. Each piece is drawn one at a time, so no two are perfectly identical. Even maps of the same mountain will have subtle variations in ink density and line character. They're originals made with the help of code.
What size are the maps?
All maps are 12" × 18" and fit standard frames in that size. No custom framing needed.
What colors are available?
Most maps come in five colorways, each plotted with a different ink on complementary paper. The Navy colorway uses a metallic gold ink with subtle iridescence. You can see the options on each product page. Have a specific color in mind that isn't listed? We love working with new colors — send us a note and we can probably make it happen.
Will it fade?
Maps are drawn with pigment-based archival ink on acid-free paper. They won't yellow or fade under normal display conditions. As with any artwork, we recommend keeping them out of prolonged direct sunlight and displaying under glass for the longest life.
Where does the data come from?
Elevation data is assembled from multiple high-resolution public datasets, often at different scales and resolutions. Trail data is derived primarily from OpenStreetMap, then carefully audited, corrected, and meticulously refined through a manual, detail-driven process that includes referencing heat maps and recent trail reports. We aim to include every trail within a network, though an infrequently used trail may be omitted if it would disproportionately alter the map’s composition. All trail maps are reviewed and updated at least annually to reflect the current state of the trail network. Every map is built from real geographic data and shaped through deliberate craft.
How does shipping work?
Maps are made to order. Allow 1–4 business days for production, plus shipping time. Every map is shipped flat between rigid boards in a protective mailer — no rolling or tubes. You'll receive a tracking number when it ships.
What is your return policy?
If you're not happy with your map, we accept returns within 7 days. Just send it back in the original packaging. Return shipping is at your expense. If your map arrives damaged, send us a photo and we'll ship a replacement at no cost.
What if my map arrives damaged?
It shouldn't, but if it does, send us a photo and we'll ship a replacement. Because every plot is unique, the replacement will be a freshly drawn version of the same map with its own subtle character.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. International shipping is available at checkout. Delivery typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on destination.
Can I request a custom map?
Yes! If you've got a favorite peak, trail, or location in mind, we'd love to hear about it. If it's a place others would enjoy too, we may add it to the shop directly at no extra charge — otherwise we offer custom maps as a separate listing. Send us a note and we can figure it out.
Can the text on my map be personalized?
Yes! Whether it's a date, a name for a gift, or a line of text that means something to you, we're happy to add custom text to any map at no extra cost. Just make sure to enter it exactly how you'd like it to appear, including any punctuation.
Can you mark a special spot on the map?
Absolutely. If there's a meaningful location like a trailhead, a summit, or a favorite campsite, we can add a small marker (circle, triangle, or heart). You'll get a proof by email before anything is plotted, so we'll make sure the placement is right.
Do you offer custom sizes?
Got a frame you love that doesn't fit the standard dimensions? Or a specific spot on your wall that needs an exact fit? We can do that. Send us a note and we'll get back to you with a quote.
What if I have an idea for something totally different?
We love those requests. If the geographic data exists, there's a good chance we can turn it into something beautiful. Send us a note with what you're thinking and let's see what's possible.
Do you offer wholesale?
Yes! If you run a shop in a mountain town, resort, or outdoor retail space, please get in touch via the contact page.
