+ About this map
Mount Harvard rises to 14,421 feet in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, the third-highest peak in the state after Elbert and Massive and the highest of the Collegiate Peaks. It stands above the Arkansas Valley north of Buena Vista, a broad, heavy mountain whose summit is a jumble of large blocks rather than a single point, with Mount Columbia connected to it by a long ridge to the southeast.
This map traces the sprawling form of the mountain. The contour lines fan out from the summit along several ridges, with Horn Fork Basin cut into the south side and the Frenchman Creek drainage on the east, each drawn as a wide bowl held by tighter contours on its headwalls. The connecting ridge to Columbia runs off the southeast corner of the frame, and the north side drops toward the Pine Creek valley. Within this frame the terrain covers nearly 3,900 feet, and the even grade of the contours shows why Harvard is considered one of the more straightforward of Colorado’s high peaks.
