+ About this map
Purgatory rises to 10,822 feet in the San Juan Mountains north of Durango, Colorado. Founded in 1965, it is known for its distinctive stepped terrain: runs roll over a series of natural benches, alternating steep pitches with flat landings in a rhythm found almost nowhere else. Its 105 trails look out on the jagged Needles, some of the most dramatic peaks in the Rockies, and the mountain keeps a relaxed, local character far from the front-range crowds.
The contour map makes the signature terraced terrain easy to read, each bench a pause in the tight bands of contour lines.
