+ About this map
Dix Mountain rises to 4,857 feet in the Adirondack High Peaks, the sixth-highest summit in New York and the high point of the Dix Range. The range is one of the wildest corners of the High Peaks, a long ridge running south from Dix over Hough, South Dix, Macomb and Grace, and the mountain’s slopes carry several large rock slides. The rocky sub-summit called the Beckhorn juts from the south end of the summit ridge.
This map traces a steep, isolated mountain. The contour lines run tightly on all sides of Dix, with the ridge to the Beckhorn showing as a narrow spur and the slides on the flanks visible as smooth, steep bands. The range continues south along the lower edge of the sheet. Elevation on this map runs from about 2,200 feet in the surrounding valleys to the summit, roughly 2,600 feet of relief.
